Central Air Conditioners
Single Stage
Considered a basic unit, a single-stage system houses a compressor that runs at 100% capacity only. This system is either on or off and its job is to cool your home as quickly as possible. It remains on until it reaches your desired temperature, and then turns off, cycling back on once the temperature warms up.
FACTORS TO CONSIDER:
- Lower upfront cost
- Sufficient cooling and dehumidifying
- Lower efficiency than other units
- Not as quiet as advanced systems
Two Stage
A two-stage system has a compressor that runs at full capacity on high or at 60% to 70% capacity on low. This is considered the middle ground of AC units – better than single stage, but not as efficient as the newer variable speed models with inverter technology.
FACTORS TO CONSIDER:
- Advanced humidity control
- More efficient than singe stage
- Consistent temperature control
- Quieter than single stage
Variable Speed
A variable speed air conditioner is considered the most efficient unit available. Using inverter technology, it works at a lower capacity making minute adjustments to maintain a consistent temperature throughout your home all day long. If you are interested in more uniform cooling throughout your home without the up and down temperature swings of traditional systems, then an inverter-driven system may be for you.

Heat Pumps/Dual Fuel
Heat pumps can both cool and heat your home. In colder areas, they can be combined with furnaces for energy-efficient heating. When the temperature outside drops too low for the heat pump to operate effectively, the system will instead use the furnace to generate heat. This system is called a Dual Fuel system – it is very energy efficient and cost effective.
